Embrace Life

Following the tragedy of two Belgrave teenage girls taking their lives in Ferntree Gully recently, some people are making a stellar effort to do something positive and uplifting. A concert about the value of life and suicide prevention will be held in Belgrave on May 12. They need as much support as possible! For more information visit www.myspace.com/embracelife07

or you can read the Knox Leader on May 8 or online later that day at www.knoxleader.com.au

drugs and footy

The tangle of drugs in AFL has been in the spotlight recently. Does this apply to suburban and regional football leagues??

Piercingly obvious

Should it be illegal to pierce or tattoo people under the age of 18?

Apparently there is no legislation preventing body piercers and tattoo artists from making their mark on minors.

Should there be more stringent regulations and repercussions and what should they be??

Emotional Punks

Who out there knows much about this whole business of being ‘emo’? Apparently followers of this sub-culture believe in suicide and some have even made suicide pacts. But it seems to me that for most people who would be labelled ‘emo’ it is more about a style in terms of music taste and clothing, than a belief in a set of principles.

Are emos trying to rebel or fit in?

What about the music? Do people think that emo bands encourage desolate attitudes?

Another Library in the Outer East?

Who would support the building of a library in Bayswater?? It would be a co-located facility, possibly with council services, health services, cafe, art space, performance space, conference and meeting rooms.

Any other ideas??

HOW do you get away without a car?

I have recently stopped using a car and have been catching public transport, doing a lot of walking and today I rode to work. However, I’m wondering if anybody else has tips for getting by? How do you visit friends in the country who don’t live within Koo-wee of a train station? What about travelling from an outer-east suburb to Frankston?? I live in Bayswater and my closest friend lives in Carrum. If I was to catch trains it would now take me at least two hours.

What does everybody think of Melbourne’s public transport system?

NOOK future

Calling on the opinion of nooksters and asking for some feedback from admin…

In terms of making sure Nook does not become stagnant, what are the chances of making it possible to have a list of suburban divisions? That way if people wanted to they could direct questions, reviews and posts about the area they live in?? It would make it easier to search for previous posts about venues etc… and would possibly evoke more responses as nooksters could see questions which were relevant to them.

Does this make any sense??

Bit of a fizzer!

One of the Leader teams was faced with a bit of a conundrum today.

We want to know IS:

Why is it when you drop a can of soft drink it sprays EVERYWHERE. But when they come tumbling all at once, with a big THUMP at the bottom of the vending machine…just a clean ‘csshht’ sound when you pull the ring back? No spray?!

In the public interest

What do people think about news outlets reporting on suicide? At this stage, journalists can write about suicide in general and the issue of suicide, but any road deaths, train ‘accidents’, falls from high places, people burning to death in their garage (which was later found to be locked behind them)…..cannot be reported once suicide is established, or even suspected. Even when reporting on suicide in general, journalists have to be careful not to give details about how somebody might kill themselves. Do you think reporting on suicide really gives people ideas? Would reading a story about suicide make a difference as to whether somebody kills themselves or not ie. would it prompt them to do so? Does reporting on suicide glorify the act?

Suicide is a tragic, difficult to grapple reality in Victoria, with especially shocking statistics for young men in country and regional areas. It is an issue which certainly needs to be approached with sensitivity, empathy, open-mindedness and trepidation. It is certainly something to avoid encouragement!

But in terms of giving people ideas, how is reporting on suicide any different to reporting on murder, adultery, fraud or even graffiti?

Would reporting on suicide take the suicide rate up, or would it shed light on a taboo topic and give people a better understanding of the issue? Could it not, by detailing the aftermath and the grief which a family is suffering, deter somebody from going through with the act? Could it not, by including comments from counsellors and contacts for helplines, save somebody’s life?

 What do you think?!!

From a Bayswater cranny (and nook)…

Was this site named after the Nook brothel in Bayswater by any chance? Hope similar potential wasn’t seen in terms of social networking…
